Argumentative Essay Prompts that Should Spark an Interest!

Argumentative essay (sometimes called a pro-con essay) requires a writer to take a position on a controversial issue, and defend it. The argumentative essay must also include the arguments of the opposing viewpoint and attempt to refute those arguments, using facts and data that have been gathered through research. It should not be confused with the persuasive essay – the purpose of a persuasive essay is to present only one’s opinion and supportive evidence. The opposing view is not presented at all.

The first step in writing an argumentative essay is to choose a topic, and here are a couple of argumentative essay tips:

  1. Choose a topic about which you have strong feelings. It will be much easier to write about something in which you have a strong personal investment.
  2. Choose a topic about which you can find sufficient information/data to support your opinion and to degrade the opposing one. If you can’t find enough information, your argument becomes an opinion piece, not a scholarly one.

Argumentative Essay Prompts

When these essays are required as part of coursework assignments, it is normal for the instructor to either allow students free reign of topic choice, or, at least provide a large number of argument essay prompts from which students may then choose. Again, as you look through that list, be certain to choose a prompt that really interests you. The essay will be more fun if you do so.

If, on the other hand, you have been given free reign of topic choice, you will want to look for creative and interesting argumentative essay ideas. Rather than rummage all over, take a look at the following essay prompts, for one of them may grab your attention.

  • Should alternatives to the theory of evolution be taught in public schools?
