Nowadays, there are varios of ways to get new information such as; country wide television, local television, the internet, local newspaper, radio and countrywide newspaper. Among these sources, “the internet is by a long way the most popular source of information” (Reuters). This essay analyzes the web sites of the three churches. These evaluations are well mentioned in the article of “Portrait of the Future Church: A Rhetorical Analysis of Congregational Websites” by Lynne M. Baab. The main appraisal will be about the rhetorical analysis of the use of metaphors on their websites. “Metaphor refers to a verbal figure that involves the switch of meaning that is associated with a word to another” (Baab, 150).
Three churches are selected from across the Canada to demonstrate the differences of Christianity by provinces. The first church is located in Calgary, Alberta and it is a mega-church. Centre Street Church has the most attendance by 7,000 people compared to all other churches in Canada. The second church is located in Halifax, Nova Scotia; it is a large church too. Cathedral Church of All Saints is the largest Anglican cathedral Church in Canada and built in 1907-1910. Lastly, the third church located in Vancouver, British Columbia. Compared to the other two, it is a smaller church. The essay discusses the similarities and differences of the websites. In addition to that, whether the websites are easy to navigate or are confusing. Apart from that, the aim of the websites and the good and the bad things about the websites. Also, whether the author would attend a service at any of the churches based on the website. Finally, the recommendations the author would make to improve any of the three websites.
Each church has a distinct value and every church approach their congregations differently. The homepage of the Centre Street Church is similar to that of the Redemption Church. For instance, both websites have a huge slide in the opening page which flows automatically after every 5 seconds. However, images of the slides inside the websites are noticeably different. Centre Street Church updates their high-resolution images from season to season. Right now, it is a Christmas season and they have already uploaded events that are going to be in December such as, New Year’s Eve service and youth Christmas party. On the other hand, Redemption Church has one quote, an announcement and two pictures from their past services. The quality of the images is not as good like those of Centre Street church. The home page of the Cathedral church of All Saints has a different outline compared two other churches. Instead of slides, they preferred using “Welcome” section that includes brief information about the church. Each website bears some similarity to each other, in Centre Street Church and Redemption Church websites, it takes place in the above of the slides and for Cathedral Church of All Saints, it is above the “Welcome” message part. In figure 1,2 and 3 show the outline of the three websites.
