Erikson 8-stage life span theory
There is need to clearly point out the Erikson 8-stage life span theory provides a practical and vivid description of the developmental stage a child is expected to go through from childhood to adulthood. The essay is developed to review my life as a woman by looking these eight stages as proposed by Erikson.
The infancy stage is between 0-3months; there is no doubt to the fact that I do not have a remembrance of the activities that characterized my life at this stage. However, with the help of my mom, I was able to get an idea. According to Erickson this stage is characterize by a desire for hope. My mom said at this state I was always longing to be held and comforted and I would cry when I wasn’t held, comforted or feed.
The Early childhood stage is between ages 2-4, although do not also have clear Idea of what I was like at this state I turned to my dad for help. Erikson clearly pointed out that this stage is characterized by “will.” my dad told me at this stage I always wanted to do things on my own something I wanted to serve my breakfast, dress up myself and he said the most intriguing aspect of the stage was that I always wanted to help out with difficult tasks like dishwashing and cleaning.
The Pre-school stage is between ages 4-5, I also needed to be reminded about few things at this stage although I had a little memory of some events that took place at this stage, according to Erickson this stage is characterized by purpose. I remembered that this stage I began making friends and I could actually commit the name of my friends to memory. At this stage I remembered that my desire was always based on going out to play in the yard with friends. My dad also reminded that at this stage I never liked staying back at home with the nanny I wanted to go out with him and that I was always excited at any opportunity to out.
The School stage is between ages 5-12, there is need to clearly emphasize that the activities of this stage are well entrenched in my memory, and it is therefore easy to relay them. This stage is said to be characterized by competence. For me, this stage was based on determining and proofing my abilities hence in my relationship with people of my age I never hid my talents and abilities’ engage in sports and other recreational activities
The adolescence stage is between ages 12-19, there is need to clearly emphasize that I am currently in this stage of the life span theory by Erickson. This stage for me is currently being characterized by questions such as who am I, what do I want in life, and also what will l do for a living. At this stage, I am beginning to see the need for networking, social relations and the need for a role model. I believe that a successful analysis of this stage will provide a vivid direction for my future path.
The Early adulthood stage takes place from the age of 20 to 39; According Erickson’s life span stage is stage is characterized by the need for love and romantic relationships. There is need to stress that I have not attained the ages of this stage, however, when I attain the age in the nearest future, I see myself having a friends and partners. I see myself dating and getting married within this age bracket.
The Adulthood stage is between ages 40-60. I must also begin to be clearly stressing that I will be in this stage in the nearest future. However, I could also predict what my life and actions will be like at this stage. According to the life span stage theory as propounded by Erickson this stage is characterized by the attribute of care. Therefore at this stage, I will be expected to care for people around me mostly my family i.e. my husband, children and also to care for my workmates and people close to me.
The Maturity Stage features between age 60 to death. It must also be clearly noted that I will also feature in this stage in the nearest future. However, according to Erikson’s life span stages theory, the maturity stage is characterized by wisdom and a complete reflection on life. Therefore I am expected to conduct deep soul searching at this stage to consider the effects of my decisions and actions in the past.
Conclusion
The Erikson life span stages theory is of enormous importance as it provides an avenue for analyzing the years I have spent on earth. It is also unique because it provides detailed expected behaviors and characteristics of each stage and based on these features I was able to ask from my family the details of the stages for which I have no memory of, I was able to analyze the stages I could remember, and with the aid life span stages theory could predict my expected future behaviors for the stage I have not attained.
