Ethics in business
Ethics are a set of rules established by professional organizations to assist their members in deciding the appropriate course of action in a given circumstance. In order for the employees to know what is expected of them in terms of doing what is right while deciding between right and ethical, these sets of ethics are primarily found in the codes of conduct. Most of the time, following moral guidelines is difficult, and most people experience moral issues (Resick 960).
The majority of people in the business world, for instance, deal with moral conundrums on a regular basis. They are often torn between making the right choices and weighing the implications of their decisions. Most of the impacts include hefty fines or job losses. Hence, most of them remain silent or act in ways that will favor them overlooking the ethical and right aspect. Many circumstances in the workplace lead to ethical dilemmas. One of the most common ones, which will form the basis of our discussion, is harassment. Harassment at the workplaces occurs in many forms. Notably, harassment in any form is a way of discrimination, which is not acceptable and violates most of the federal regulations (Minson, 105).
Such types of harassment include sexual, physical or mental harassment. The common form of harassment that leaves employees in an ethical dilemma is the sexual one, which mostly happens to the junior employees from the senior ones who often seem untouchable. In the past, the females were the most vulnerable to this form of harassment, but in the recent past, men have also become victims. They are usually harassed and threatened by firing if they tell or they are promised salary increment and promotion among other favors that will motivate them to keep the secret (Jagsi, 2120).
Most of them fear to report to the authorities so that they do not lose their jobs and at the same time, they are committed to other relationships with their spouses, or they simply feel that their personal space has been and rights have been violated. They are therefore faced with the dilemma of reporting the seniors to the higher authorities and as a result, losing jobs, and staying silent and suffer the oppression silently. In some cases, you find that they are the people in those top offices and if not, they influence the people in those positions. It may also occur among the workmates ( Jagsi, 2121)
These forms of harassment undermine the victims and lower their morale to work, and therefore, there is a need to find an ultimate solution to provide an environment that is free of such harassments. Different measures can be taken by the organizations to ensure they protect their employees from such incidences. These include the collective formulation of anti-harassment policies that should be communicated clearly to the departments. These policies assure that such cases are addressed efficiently and quickly. The policies should apply to everyone regardless of their ranks, and they should regularly be revised so that they can remain relevant in the workplace. All employees should be made to comprehend the policy and how to deal with harassment (Minson, 115).
Also, provision of education and availing information regarding harassment to all members of staff regularly is critical in ensuring that the employees do not suffer in silence since this topic has been labeled a taboo in many organizations. They should be encouraged to speak up and report to the relevant authorities. The supervisors and managers should understand their position in the provision of a harassment-free working environment. Additionaly, investigations of complaints regarding harassment ought to be hastened and the culprits to face the consequences (Minson 118).
