Human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome
And the Band Played On 1993 details the events following the discovery of HIV/AIDS. The movie describes how the disease was handled during its era of discovery through a journalistic approach. The movie shows how four communities handled the burden of the disease. The communities included the medical community, the gay community, the government and the political community, and lastly the mass media. The film displays that whereas the disease was biologically caused by human immunodeficiency virus, the lack of response both from the political and from the medical communities, influenced by the mass media, made it become an epidemic (Shilts, 2007).
Of course, if the health industry would have done its best to address the issue of HIV/AIDS adequately, it may have not have turned to be an epidemic. First, relevant research was lacking on the etiology and the pathophysiology of the disease (Modine et al., 2005). In case the health industry would have conducted studies and research regarding the causation of HIV/AIDS, people would have been informed about the disease, hence, preventing and controlling it would have been easier. The film reveals that people living in the era of HIV discovery had many misconceptions concerning the facts behind the disease (Modine et al., 2005). However, the health industry would have countered this challenge through information sharing.
Secondly, the medical community might have improved the outcomes of the disease’ epidemic through investing in equipment that would enhance diagnosis and treatment of the causes of this epidemic (Shilts, 2007). The misconception that people had regarding the disease was mostly contributed by the wrong diagnosis of the disease. Accurate diagnosis would have aided in the early prevention and control of the disease. Thus, curtailing its spread to the humanity. If right diagnosis has worked in the contemporary society and HIV/AIDS is not viewed as an epidemic anymore, then the same would have worked in the past. Finally, yet importantly, the health sector could have created awareness on the disease to avoid making it a burden to the community (Modine et al., 2005). Creation of awareness would not have only enlighten the society on the dangers of the infectious virus but would also have informed the public on how to deal with the disease in case one is infected or affected.
The role of policy affects healthcare industry in several ways. Policies acts as catalysts in the delivery and financing of health care in clinical industries. The biggest role that policies play in any healthcare field is providing guidance to the institutions. Any institution is driven by goals and objectives. Hence, the existence of policies would help any healthcare industry in achieving its visions through systematically following the policy procedures. Besides, as mentioned earlier, policies act as catalysts. That is, they always facilitate the agendas of institutions, for instance, in healthcare, where care needs to be enhanced. Lastly, policies prompt changes in the health industry. The periodic amendment of policies and procedures in the healthcare sector helps in improving service delivery and enhancing care among patients within the clinical settings. The change in the administration or the hospital leadership often creates a better environment for effective leadership and service delivery. Thus it would be substantial to believe that policies, as catalysts enhance positive changes within the healthcare industry.
