Hygiene of oneself
After visiting the bathroom, a large number of people in restaurants do not wash their hands. This study is intended to test the hypothesis through restaurant observations. The dependent variable is the operation of the hand-washers, while the independent variable is the availability of cleaning material in the restaurant's washroom. The research settings were made up of five restaurants in the neighborhood and studied a total of 110 individuals in intervals of 20 minutes. Observations showed that approximately 70% of the visitors to a laundry room, which accounted for 77 people, washed their hands. Some restaurants recorded higher number of persons washing their hands than others, with the results as follows;
Restaurant |
No of People washed hands over total observed |
Restaurant 1 |
10/12 |
Restaurant 2 |
12/26 |
Restaurant 3 |
30/40 |
Restaurant 4 |

My findings do support my hypothesis seeing as a total of 33 people do not wash their hands after going to the washroom. This is even when considering that all restaurants observed provided for cleaning materials in their washrooms. Though a majority did, this number still represents a substantial portion of the total populous, about 30%. This presents the disconcerting reality that about a third of people everywhere do not practice personal hygiene. I learned that research involves taking note of observable variables and criteria in the environment. I also discovered that real knowledge can only be gained by extensive and accurate research and/or experimentation. A key ethical issue of conducting observational research is that the subjects are unaware of the study and have therefore not consented to the same. As such, the undertaking the inquiry, to an extent, undermines their free will. My advice to others seeking to replicate my study would be to conduct it on a larger scale, so as to gain a broader, more in-depth perspective on the matter. I did notice that most restaurants had a sign in their washrooms encouraging people to participate in personal hygiene after relieving themselves. The strengths of the research include the obtaining of first-hand information while the weakness is that the study only included a small sample size. Behaviour is the reaction of a person to external stimuli, while attitude is the psychological and emotional outlook, or perspective that a person has on a given matter.
