Multiculturalism and Education
After taking the multicultural quiz, what amazed me was the fact that there was so much for me to learn. I know a few matters about culture and equity, but the quizzes proved to be getting to know points for me. Multicultural education helps to radically change a school by offering students with educational experiences that assist them maintain their culture and accumulate knowledge. James Banks developed the multiculturalism's dimensions to help educators get an insight of content material integration which is his first concept. The second notion is knowledge construction which potential that a teacher has to help students to understand and recognize cultural assumptions and views in their disciplines. Equity pedagogics is the third aspect, where teachers use different approaches to enable learners from different racial groups to succeed. In the fourth dimension, teachers have to reduce prejudice (Banks & Tucker, 1998). Teachers help students acquire skills and knowledge to deal with diverse groups and avoid racial attitudes. The fifth dimension involves empowering school culture and social structure to make more equitable.
Banks outlines four levels multicultural content integration. Level 1 is the contributions approach where content is used on special days and events (Banks, 1989). During this period, students learn and share experiences related to the commemorated ethnic group. Level 2 is the addition approach where teachers have to introduce new themes and concepts to the students’ program without altering the structure. The third level is transformative because the curriculum is changed to make students view matters from varied cultural perspectives (Banks, 1989). The final level is a method where learners make social choices and solve problems.
The most important idea that I would focus on at higher levels is the social action approach because it comprises many elements and tests a person’s decision-making skills. The levels I can see in my school are levels 2 and 3. Teachers use different perspectives and examples from varied cultures to help students grasp content in class. They also utilize the transformative approach where students have to answer questions from the perspectives of different cultures and racial groups.
