Participation of the Audience
Micheal Pollan, the poet, has used both the logos and ethos modes of viewer appeal. The author's creative use of logos is used to demonstrate how Americans' eating patterns have been inconsistent. Pollan explains how people's dietary habits are dictated and swayed by the views of people who are unable to offer information on such diets. For example, a diet book influenced by Dr. Robert C. Atkins, who was later debunked, convinced many people that they could substitute meat for bread and pasta and still lose weight. Also, after New York Times Magazine published an article on “What if Fat Does Not Make You Fat,” people were convinced by this statement and diverted their eating habits, and started consuming bread and pasta. Pollan demonstrates how these omnivores dilemma have been established by lack of steady culture that has made eater gullible to the food marketers and scientists who have taken advantage of peoples’ lack of choice. Logically, Pollan argues, Americans assume that morsels might kill them but neglects the effects of poisonous mushroom.
The omnivores’ dilemma is about food chains that incorporate the industrial, organic and the hunter-gatherer. Pollan uses ethos when he brings the attention of moral principles to the audience who eat and kill wild animals claiming they are observing healthy eating habits. Pollan also outlines how nature, unknowingly is linked to diet to many people. Focusing on corn, he demonstrates how an industry that processes corn emits carbon which affects the ozone layer as well as ecological reliance of other crops. Hence, a human being should take care of their sustainability as well as that of the environment.
