Politics and the English Language
Politics and the English Language by Orwell depicts that many people never bother about the English language; however, the majority of these that do admit that the language has been wrongly conceived. Orwell (n.d) adds that the English language has degenerated because of several elements including the political and economic conceptions. However, Orwell (n.d) asserts that there is a sub-conscious belief, which indicates that language grows naturally as antagonistic to being an instrument that individuals shape for their own purposes. Orwell (n.d) ascertains that the language regularly declines not only because of the monetary and political reasons, but also due to bad impact from writers; however, he adds that effects can also become causes. Further, the author makes references to five passages, which he claims are badly written and influence a degenerating language. Such passages encompass the “Essay in Freedom of Expression” and “Interglossia” by Professors Laski and Hogben respectively, “Essay on psychology and politics, communist pamphlet, and the Letter in Tribune” (Orwell, n.d). Accordingly, Orwell (n.d) identifies a number of things, which signify a language as being degenerating including dying metaphors, usage of operators’ false limbs, employing pretentious diction as well as words that are meaningless.
In modern English, writers are expected to avoid the usage of words and phrases, which lead to long sentences while making the meaning ambiguous; for example, when using “a not unjustifiable assumption, leaves much to be desired, would serve no good purpose, a consideration which we should do well to bear in mind” Orwell (n.d). As such, the author outlines some rules to guide writers in ensuring that their writing is not degenerative; these incorporate never using metaphors, similes or figures of speech, often replace long words with short ones, always cut words out where there is a possibility, always use the active form of the words, desist from foreign phrases, scientific words, and jargon.
