Population of Grasshoppers
According to Charles Darwin, each organism had to undergo the process of herbal selection to enable the new era to adapt to the ever-changing environmental factors such as climate and opposition for natural resources. The process takes place in four different parts;
Overproduction
Over the lengthy period, nature has used production as a means of insurance plan in a bid to increasing chances of survival in view that each generation suffers sizeable mortality rates. Therefore, green grasshoppers at Kansas prairie have an excellent hazard of producing a new generation than the brown grasshoppers which are just 10% of the whole population.
Variation
Genetic variation within a populace results in individuals with characteristics that are different from others. These traits if beneficial could help the individual survive prevailing environmental circumstances and pass the traits to the next generation (Kuklick 92).Therefore, both green and brown grasshoppers at Kansas prairie have better chances of passing their traits to the next generation depending on which one has acquired the best characteristics suited for drought tolerance.
Competition and survival
Drought in Kansas prairie presents a case of food shortage while the bird invasion is increased predation thus decreased grasshoppers population, these results into selection pressure towards determining which individuals will do best at reproducing and surviving since some individuals are always better adapted to their environment than others(Romanes147). These traits may give the offspring a selective advantage, by developing skills to avoid predators, resistance to diseases and compete for food. However, the brown grasshoppers stand the better chance of survival than the green since they can easily camouflage on dry leaves and brown grass than the green grasshoppers.
Differential reproduction
Populations of organisms that can interbreed changes over time and space with organisms that are best adapted likely to reproduce and occupy a particular geographic area. Therefore, drought persistence will make green grasshoppers more exposed as the tree leaves turn brown hence they will be eaten by the birds, and their population will substantially reduce, and the brown grasshoppers will dominate Kansas prairie.
