The 21st century saw a plethora of technological advances on both fronts. The purpose of this essay is to prove that the collection of information is a violation of privacy and should be illegal.

With an increasing percentage of our lives being online, intrusions in our on-line privacy can have major detrimental effects on our daily lives. Many people have come to have major trusts issues with web providers for the fear of leakage of personal information within the on-line world. More specifically, each piece of information extracted leaves us vulnerable in terms of what we say, where we go or located, and the ones we associate with(Sullivan, 2016). Government agencies have been accused of tracking citizens on a daily basis with the Central Intelligence Agency asserting itself as the “big brother(Newmark, 2016). Advertising firms have also been accused of invading privacy and selling the acquired data o other players without one’s consent. Moreover, the existence of individuals preying on users has instilled genuine fears in users as they engage in online use. For instance, identity thefts have been perpetrated continuously causing damaging all-encompassing effects to the victims. Financial losses have also been reported when data breaches occur; cyber sleuths are under duress working all round the clock to ensure data is not breached(Newmark, 2016). Nevertheless, the threat of privacy is ubiquitous and solving one problem opens more advanced pathways for the development of another. As a result, the issue of internet privacy has become a pervasive paradox that has affected users at least once in their internet usage.

It is essential not to disregard the fact that the collection of information on-line also presents advantages. To begin with, information collected by advertising agencies is intended to customize their preferences and tastes hence provide better satisfaction in the end. Additionally, personal information allows access to valuable services such as health and financial services that ease the way in which we operate(Sullivan, 2016). Moreover, the collection of information by the government is done with the intent of ensuring security of the citizens in a world where the potent threats of crime and terrorism are a major concern(Newmark, 2016). It is also worth noting that the many websites present the user with the option of providing personal details and urge the user to make a point of personally taking measures in ensuring privacy through the use of antivirus software and safe browsing practices. It is key to note that stories of data abuse are relatively scarce and public attention always seems to be drawn to negative spectacles.

Overall, the issue of privacy presents a complex issue with multiple views which are subjective to the user. From a personal perspective, the issue of data collection online is illegal and should not be tolerated. There exists not compromise between the advantages presented and the disadvantages experienced as a result of the practice. On-line data collection presents a violation of basic human rights and should be treated with the utmost seriousness.
