Reduction of waste
I've been working on gathering plastic bottles that students have thrown out throughout the school's grounds for the past two months. The objective intends to reduce the amount of plastic waste in the school's grounds by at least 80%. The remaining 5% of the collected plastic bottles and bags will be burned; the remaining 95% will be taken for recycling. The incineration process will adhere to the state's air pollution and waste management regulations.
preparing for the assignment in advance
Statistics show that 97% of students use plastic bottles to transport soft drinks or drinking water, while 80% of students use plastic bags to package snacks and packed lunches. Only 60% of the plastics are reused by the owners, and the rest are thrown away as waste. The school does not comply entirely to waste management laws imposed by the state. To improve the ways in which the school handles plastic waste, I need to identify the particular member of the staff who is negligent. I must also find a way to impose a rule that inhibits careless handling of plastic wastes by students. I may also need the involvement of the state government.
Once the plan is in place, it will be easier to manage all the plastic waste within the school compound. An incinerator will also be built with the compliance to state law to handle the plastic waste that cannot be recycled. I will also mobilize the students to actively take part in this initiative since it will save the school the expense of hiring a large number of cleaning workers.
Current accomplishment
The work currently being done by the school workers is not sufficient to get rid of all the plastics. I have worked with all the enthusiastic students and have 90% of the plastic wastes cleared of the compound. Out of which 30% are being incinerated. The percentage being incinerated is much higher and as a result increasing the amount of carbon being released into the atmosphere.
The involvement of an external organization has been of greater help to this effect. The company introduced better ways of recycling which has reduced the amount of plastic being incinerated and air pollution. Currently, the state government has sponsored the construction of the situation of the art incinerator, and that will see efficiency in plastic waste handling within the school. The school administration has also proposed the construction of a recycling plant within the school to reduce the transportation cost of plastic waste. It will see the school earning over $10,000 from selling plastic products apart from teaching students technical aspects of recycling.
What is yet to be accomplished
What has not yet been fully achieved is the mobilization of students into the initiative. The majority of them are still reluctant about plastic waste management. The construction recycling plant also needs to be implemented as soon as possible. Apart from getting rid of plastics, it will create jobs for the former students who are expertise in chemical engineering. The state government must also assess the construction site before construction can begin to evaluate any possible threat it will present to the safety of the students and the school at large.
Conclusion
The possibility of attaining plastic free school environment does not only depends on everyone within the school environs but must also be assisted by other industries and the state government. To realize this dream, everyone must be compliant with all the rules and regulations of the institution and the state.
