My experience with the special collection
My experience with the special collection was very fascinating, and it gave me a chance to compare the kind of literature that existed in the early years to the literature that exists today. Indeed, the special collections offer a good description of the early writers and the types of vocabulary, literary forms, and terms used in their work.
The use of satire
Based on my study of the subject of satire, my experience with the special collection led me to realize that satire is often used as a form of mockery or irony to ridicule people's folly, corruption in culture, government, and other organizations. For instance, I observed that Los Angeles Times once published several iconic illustrations and one of them was created to criticize a man named George Wallace, who was an Alabama governor. Since Governor Wallace was believed to be a racist, the illustration by LA Times showed that he appeared on Liberty statue's head and heavy smoke came out from the torch.
Another instance of satire
Another instance of satire that I saw in the special collections was an illustration of a skeleton of an elephant that had three skulls. The purpose of this illustration was to make fun of the Republican Party in the United States and criticize them for their actions.
Understanding satire
However, before my experience with the special collections, I used to think that satire was a style that was used in a direct form and not complicated. However, through my encounter with the special collections, I noticed that the theme of satire in the early years was developed more indirectly and a reader could get confused when trying to identify it. Since I am not a fan of history, I experienced a hardship of trying to read one of the old books that is three hundred years old, and for me to capture the idea of satire, it would take me a long while.
