In today's world, where there are too many articles to choose from, finding a credible source is a challenging challenge. In this case, however, Maria Traska's article "The Void in Charter Schools: How can kids cultivate a passion for reading without a library to nurture them?" is fitting. The source focuses on the difficulties that charter schools face, especially when it comes to developing students without the use of libraries. When I looked up charter school issues on the internet, this article came up first, and a closer look at it informed my decision to use it. The article also adds a new dimension to my analysis, which will help to increase the overall quality of the report. Children from minority and vulnerable groups, unstable families as well as those who experience parental abuse are more susceptible to adopting violent behavior from television programs as well as the internet.
Nowadays, cases of terrorism and civil wars have increased significantly across the universe. The issue of whether the media has triggered this increment has initiated a debate among scholars. Some assert that despite many Americans watching films containing violent scenes, they fail to engage in the vice. In fact, they argue that there is no direct link between imagery violence and aggression among citizens of the U.S. Nevertheless, others argue that, the media has played a critical role in triggering violent behavior among the youth (Mrug, Madan and Windle 77). Here, the researchers affirm that although media violence may fail to influence the vice directly, it may be a primary contributing factor. Similarly, they assert that human beings may fail to understand the relationship between violence in fiction and the actual behavior.
Teenagers who spend many hours in a day watching violent scenes in movies tend to be more aggressive as compared to their counterparts who spend less time watching. Indeed, constant exposure to hostility imagery has different effects on a person’s behavior. In this case, the fictional violence scenes may make the viewer, fearless towards aggression, lack sympathy towards victims of violence by perceiving them as weak as well as engaging in the actual violent behavior (Mrug, Madan and Windle 77). Individuals tend to view people engaging in aggressive behavior in TV programs as their role models since they are branded as fearless and brave. The media, however, fails to show the viewers of violent fictional movies the need to use their vitality to keep others safe. Here the concept of being your brother’s keeper lacks in the imagery. It is for this reason that youths are quickly recruited into terrorist groups, which are responsible for mass killings.
Notably, the amount of time spent watching television and playing violent videos games has a direct impact on the behavior of adolescents both at home and in school. Students, who spend most of their time watching violent films and playing intense video games, tend to have more cases of aggressiveness in school (Mrug, Madan and Windle 80). Human beings tend to easily remember and apply what they see on the TV in their daily activities as opposed to what they hear or read. When people spend a lot of time watching films with violent imagery the begin admiring the violent behavior of the actors. Afterwards, they start practicing the actions with their peers. Violent behavior viewed and practiced for an extended period becomes difficult to control.
In overall, watching violent imagery can influence the actual behavior among the youth. The media presents aggression as a good conduct despite being a vice that has negative repercussions in the society. It is hard to control what is made available to children through the media, but parents can protect their children by overseeing what they watch on television.
