Conformity is the act of modifying one's behavior, viewpoint, or attitude in order to conform to the views of a society or group. The shift in behavior could be the result of actual or fictitious pressure from others. It is caused by the social impact of those around you. The purpose of this thesis is to examine the writing of the stories in order to discover the gender of the speakers and how their writing conforms to gender.
First Story
The first story is about a woman who narrates her narrative about when she was a little child and was afraid, as represented in her story. Her writing is conformed to gender because her parents influence her life and her friend Darlene is being raped and killed by his own grandfather who is later found out to have pedophilia. Additionally, her writing is conformed to gender since she keeps viewing at the Los Angeles Times archives for the articles from 1947.
Second Story
The second story is about a man who narrates the story of how he was attracted to black girls when he was a young boy of age 7 yet his family members did not approve of that and kept talking negatively about black girls. This means that his writing was conformed to gender. However, despite his family wishes he goes against them and marries a black lady and vows to love their children even if they grew up gay hence this writing does not conform to gender.
Third Story
In addition, the third story is about man whose parents divorced when he was young. According to his story, his writing is conformed to gender because his alcoholic father manipulated him to think that his mother was abusing her physically and so he chose to go with his Dad when the parents divorced. He was influenced by a father who was close to him and loved him a lot. Nonetheless, the fourth story is about a woman who was abandoned by his father when she was young. According to her writing, it is not conformed to gender because she is never influenced by his father's behavior. Through the experience that she had gone through with her father, ironically, she became a better and strong parent who had a close affiliation with his son.
Last Story
Concisely, the last story is about a woman who experienced a lot of stress due to divorce. The woman tried to conform herself into the kind of person her husband wanted her to be but all these did not make any difference. Her writing is not conformed to gender because in spite of the difficulties she experienced during her divorce she overcame that and now she is independent and strong. Moreover, she went back to school and will be graduating in December with her Bachelor's in Psychology. She now has the freedom of marrying the man of her dreams without passing through pain and bad experiences.
