Critique of Article
The essay being criticized is entitled Phenomenological Interpretative Research. The essay is primarily about how people make sense of different topics and their interpretation of them. With lots of sources, it is a well-reviewed post.
It begins with a history of phenomenological interpretative study and explains its emergence from the psychological testing level. This is accompanied by the same theoretical basis to demonstrate proof from peer-reviewed sources (Larkin&Thompson, 2012). The interpretative phenomenological study of ontology is discussed later in the article.
The method that was adapted for this research involved the use of some open-ended questions that included prompts that explained further the topic. There were interviews which started by asking broad questions. The interviewed were timed and the data was stored in recordings that were later transcribed.
Analysis of the transcripts was done using IPA. Analysis was done for the first transcript them repeated for the others. Finally in the last stage, the themes for the whole study were established. The interviewees reported cases of fatigue as the predominant illness that encountered them but also came up with another list of symptoms including pain, cognitive difficulties and gastrointestinal problems (Wodak&Meyer, 2009). The symptoms were first evaluated on the basis of known ailments. Once the known ailments provided little or no information on their symptoms, further research seemed to be their only solution. The unending symptoms made the clients wonder if the symptoms were there to stay or would end at some point in their lives.
The research questions that were used for this study had the purpose of involving issues and experiences that were of considerable significance to the participants. They are often transformative issues that deal with social and personal identity.
The paper also adopted snowballing as the sampling method. It involved approaching people with some kind of characteristic and asking them to refer the researchers to another group of people with similar characteristics so as to have a population that would give more accurate results (Smith, 2011). The questions used in the interviews gave a vivid description of the participants and also gave the needed feedback from the participants’ point of view. The analysis was done in four different stages from the initial to the final stage.
The set of further readings are important for the reader as he is able to get references where he can access more readings. They can also be used to prove whether what the author of the article is saying is correct. The researchers showed no evidence of potential biases as the article is so straight forward and touches on all issues as far as interpretative phenomenological analysis is concerned.
Ethical principles have been applied in the study through the order that was adopted while conducting the research. The questions asked were also very ethical. Ethics were also observed in the process of decision making since the decisions made were to be used in real life conditions and they therefore had to be realistic and associable.
The article is however a good one that can easily be used for reference. It adopts the use of a clear and concise language that is easy to associate with. It is also formatted correctly to ensure that the reader is able to view every detail of it.
