Government Branches
According to article 1 of the American Constitution, the legislature is the most powerful body of government. (Baldwin, 2004). The term ""congress"" is also used to describe the division. The primary responsibility for creating federal legislation rests with the legislature. The US Constitution explains both the functions and authority of the legislative branch. Senators and members of the house of representatives make up the two chambers that make up the congress. Senators are chosen every six years, while House representatives are chosen every two years. (Jacobson & Carson, 2015). As a result, the paper will describe one legislative branch strength, one weakness, and one solution to keep strength and address weaknesses.
One Strength of Legislative Branch of Government
One significant strength of the American legislative branch is its supremacy. The branch has powers to create and reject laws hence helping in protecting the civil rights of the US citizens (Jacobson & Carson, 2015). On the same note, the congress has the power to maintain honesty in both executive and judiciary branch by rejecting laws that the executive may need to generate. Remarkably, the president has veto powers to pass or reject laws passed by the congress. However, the presidential decision based on the right of veto can be overruled by the legislative branch. A two-thirds vote can override the presidential veto powers by the congress house members.
One Weakness of Legislative Branch of Government
One major significant weakness facing the legislative branch is the limited period of service of the congress members hence discontinuity of the activities. For instance, the legislature is made up of two houses which have different serving terms. The house of senators comprises of a hundred members who are elected in every six years while the house of representatives comprises of the majority members with a population of four hundred and thirty-five and the members are elected in every two years (Baldwin, 2004). The working span of the house of representative members is minimal which creates room for discontinuity of the law making process. Whenever new members are elected, it takes quite a time to familiarize and become experts in the law making process hence slowing down the process of law making hence there is no continuity.
One Option to Maintain the Strength of the Branch of Government Discussed Above
Furthermore, to keep the Congress strength on supremacy in creating laws, the legislation should be entirely confident that the law made and passed are rational and fair to the American citizens. On the same note, the laws should not be biased or overshadow the citizen's civil rights. The option can be achieved through engaging the public in discussing the legislation to be passed hence avoid biases. By so doing, the government would involve the citizens in law making hence counting much on the US votes for re-election. Also, the residents would feel better in that they are involved in the national decision-making hence ensuring fairness, transparency, and accountability (Baldwin, 2004).
One option to correct the weakness of the legislative branch of government discussed above
Remarkably, to fix the legal weakness mentioned above, the serving time frame for the house of representative members should be increased. The election of the two house members of the legislation should be geared towards six years. By so doing, maximum benefit would be gained by the Congress hence ensuring continuity. Continuity in law making is necessary to ensure effectiveness and efficiency of the congress. For instance, swapping out members in every two years does not build continuity since some new members with little or no experience are elected hence they require time to gain relevant experience in law making (Jacobson & Carson, 2015).
