There is no way that technology will ever stop evolving in this century, and generations will continue to evolve as a result of this advancement. For this reason, Clive Thompson believes that technology is a positive thing that has changed people's lives in society. Clive has used a variety of examples in an effort to persuade the public that technology has improved people's lives. Clive uses a variety of rhetorical tactics in the piece to persuade the viewer that technology has indeed improved people's lives. He uses pathos, ethos, and logic to inform the audience that yes, technology is changing lives for the better.
The use of pathos is usually employed to gain approval from the public by evoking their emotion. He argues that there are varied uses that human beings have on computers, which make them smarter than they would be on their own. With this statement, Clive makes the audience think about their dependence on technology to perform various tasks of which would have been impossible or difficult if they did not have the technology. He goes further to give an example of game chess. He says that some players in the game collaborate with computers, which make them better than in the game (Thompson 340). As such, the audience can relate emotionally with the necessity of technology and comprehend how it enables them to meet their daily tasks.
Clive Thomson also appeals to logic. He uses reason and evidence to show how technology has changed for the better. Clive used careful reasoning in the text. He says that people derive bits of cognition from technology as evidence all through education. He uses similar educational experiences that he used in his writing by demonstrating the various technological tools that helped him make his text (Thompson 340). Clive points out how print media that is used by societies extensively today is a form of technology, which has contributed to making our societies better. The development of technology has played a critical role in developing new thinking tools. It has also facilitated the development of human brain where people work, meditate and create new devices whenever they think about tools and how they are likely to make the lives of human beings better.
Clive further explains the provisions of many scientists that are interested in brain chemistry, i.e. Naysayer in the person Nicholas Carr and others. He says that serious scientists do not know how the brain is wired (Thompson 340). He uses ethos to appeal to the audience with the use of ethical issues that are associated with the use of technology. He agrees that technology can be misused or relied upon excessively so that it makes its users lazy (Thompson 340). He gives the example of the chess player who uses computers exclusively for play as opposed to making use of his brain. However, it is ethical to value learning. In addition, if that is the case, human beings will enhance their intellect with technology.
Clive Thomson has managed to convince the audience that technology has indeed changed but it has changed for the better. He has successfully employed the use of rhetorical techniques to convince the audience that the use of technology has promoted a better society. He appealed to emotion, used logical reasoning as applied ethical reasoning to his text.
