Mexican Immigration
Immigration issues continue to be fundamental in the United States. In Fender-Bender, the plight of Mexican immigrants is depicted by the harassment of law enforcement agents. The story is a reflection of the attitudes portrayed by patrol officers when they have encountered the traffic offenders from Mexico. The analysis is aimed to compare and contrast the attitudes of the Anglo driver and the Chicano cop who are at the center of the minor accident caused by Mr. Perez.
Individuals who are aggrieved by a particular action should have the responsibility to decide how to resolve the problem. The Anglo driver, despite being affected by the accident is concerned and compassioned compared to the Chicano cop which is depicted as a frivolous person who declines that the damage is not big. The character admits “It’s not much, if it was my car, there wouldn’t be any problems, and you could go on’ (Perez 177). The statement reflects that the Anglo driver is compassionate and understanding since he perceives the issue which can be solved without any complications.
The Chicano cop, on the other hand, is described as having a malicious attitude to Mr. Perez because of his Mexican roots. He insists that the Anglo driver should press charges, and that the protagonist is willing to ensure that Mr. Perez will go to jail. He states “If you want, I can take him to jail” (Perez 178).
Furthermore, the Chicano cop has a discriminatory pose which is reflected in the perception that he has to the Mexicans. His judgment is based not on reason but the understanding that he works with people from Mexico. He claims, “That’s the way these Mexicans are” (Perez 177). It shows the Chicano cop has a negative stereotype against Mexicans. Compared to the Chicano cop, the Anglo one is concerned about the report he will give the company due to the accident. Moreover, the Anglo driver does not care whether the accident is caused by a Mexican or not, instead he worries about the report for the company.
To conclude, the concept of attitude is of fundamental significance in modern relationships. The story of the Anglo driver, Chicano cop, and Mr. Perez is a reflection of the role the treatment plays in the society. The Chicano cop insists on not resolving the issue amicably as requested by the Anglo driver because the victim is a Mexican. Mr. Perez, who is the victim, is willing to pay the driver, but the cop is against since he is more interested in seeing the victim suffer probably because of the nationality..
