In children, injury and long-term disease put new demands and difficulties on their parents. Many of these issues are related to the type of disorder and the type of family in which the child resides. There are families who can comfortably afford to take care of the crisis, while others may find it challenging to tackle the task. The problems faced by parents raising these kids are economic and social. To start with, parents taking care of children with the disability or long term illness face a challenge of not having enough time to be there for their children. The child might be admitted to a hospital for an extended period of, time or the child needs to be taken to the hospital frequently for the medical checkup (Smith, Cheater & Bekker, 2015. On the other hand, the parents might not have that time to attend to the medical needs by the children. This may be as a result of employment and busy schedules that they need to attend to.   In the long run, the child's health may deteriorate, and at the end, all blame is directed to the parents.

Also, the distance between home and hospital can pose a challenge to the parents. Most of the parents are of the middle or lower class a good number of them being unemployed. The lack of enough money by these parents poses an extra challenge to them as they cannot manage to meet the cost of transporting their child daily or weekly to the hospitals for checkups (Smith, Swallow & Coyne, 2015). When they miss a session with the doctor, they are sometimes considered ignorant or that they do not care much about their children health.

Additionally, a parent who for instance, has many children and among them is one disabled child, finds it difficult to spend more on the disabled child while they have other children who need their care (Smith, Swallow & Coyne, 2015). It is challenging for these parents to; for example, take the disabled child to hospital pay the massive bill charged in acquiring walking or seating aids for these kids and yet the other kids need to pay fees to be allowed in school.

Consecutively, parents also face a challenge of coping with lack of cooperation and acceptance from other family members or friends. It is not unusual to get a negative reaction from the other family members or friends regarding the condition of the child in question (Seligman & Darling, 2017). Many parents admit that catering for the children with disabilities is not a significant burden to them. They claim that a load is dealing with the people whose behavior and attitude are stigmatizing and judgmental of disabled individuals together with their families.

In conclusion, as seen above, the challenges that are faced by the parents raising the children with long term illness or disabilities are social and economic. These challenges have a long term effect on the affected children often feel inferior and that they do not receive much attention as other children in the society. They may develop a negative attitude towards their parents and regret why they were born and yet they are not enjoying life like other kids.  This situation makes their parents feel guilty that they are not catering to them entirely.
