Occupational Therapy vs. Physical Therapy
Many people consider occupational therapy and physical therapy to be in the same field. This is not the case, since they are two distinct occupations. The explanation for the misunderstanding between the two professions is that they have certain parallels, but we must not lose sight of the distinctions.
Parallels between Occupational Therapy and Physical Therapy
Aside from the parallels, the two occupations have a number of distinctions that highlight their distinct differentiation.
1. The first striking link between the two professions is that they both voluntarily engage patients and provide personal support in the event of mobility disorders, illnesses, or accidents (U.S Department of Veteran Affairs).
2. Secondly, both the professions involve educating the patients on the different ways of preventing injuries as well as getting healed from the same. For that reason, the two professions are geared towards improving the movement ability of the clients in the event of a sustained injury.
Nonetheless, it is important to indicate that Physical therapy primarily works to heal or prevent injuries. For that reason, it mainly focuses on healing patients to regain their movement ability through massages, exercise and other techniques. Physical therapists usually diagnose movement abnormalities and treat the injured structures and tissues. Moreover, physical therapy is primarily conducted in the physical therapist office and is a key preventative measure against surgery and long term complications.
Distinctive Features of Occupational Therapy
On the other hand, occupational therapy unlike physical therapy is mainly involved in helping patients maximize their ability to conduct their routine activities following a physical injury or disability. This occupation is therefore concerned with making the patients gain independence thereby enabling them to conduct their daily activities with ease (U.S Department of Veteran Affairs). For that reason, it aims at helping patients live a comfortable, productive and active life. Occupational therapists often work from their office. Nevertheless, they can also operate from the office or patient's home to create an environment where the patients can live a quality and productive life.
