Draining the old motor oil
Ensure that the engine oil is warm by either starting the car or letting it run for at least three minutes. This ensures that the all of the engine oil is drained smoothly. Next, park the vehicle in a safe area that is appropriate for the oil change; a garage or a driveway and on a level ground will do.
Get under the vehicle and locate the oil pan together with the drain plug. If there is inadequate space to slide under the vehicle, you may be required to jack up the vehicle. Take extra caution using a jack; always use a jack and a jack stand to support the vehicle.
After identifying the drain plug, place the oil pan/bucket on a spread newspaper below the drain plug. Loosen the drain plug using the socket wrench by turning the socket wrench in counterclockwise.

Note that the engine oil may be hot, so remove the plug cautiously. Wait till the oil streams to the last drip and then place the drain plug back to its place using your hands. Tighten the drain plug using a wrench with a quarter turn clockwise.
Replacing the oil filter
Ensure that the oil drain pan is still underneath the car, then locate the oil filter.
Using the filter wrench, loosen the oil filter by turning it counterclockwise. Using your hands, remove the oil filter.
Apply a little engine oil on the new gasket before placing the new oil filter. The engine oil prevents the gasket from cracking, an oil leak or sticking.
Slowly, install the new oil filter and tighten it using your hands.
Adding the new motor oil
The engine is now ready for new engine oil. Remember that you must have the right engine for your vehicle, and the engine oil should be of the recommended grade and quantity as indicated in the vehicle owner’s manual.
Loosen the oil-filler cap and then place a funnel on the opening to avoid spillage. Next, pour the engine oil into the tank.
After, replace the oil cap and using a rag, wipe away any engine oil that may have spilt.
Start the car engine and allow it run for a few minutes to enable the engine oil to circulate in all appropriate areas. The process is almost finished but before driving off the vehicle checks the oil level by:
- Turning off the engine
- Remove and wipe clean the dipstick
- Insert the dipstick again and remove it.
- Check the correct reading of the level of the oil engine.
- If correct, screw the oil cap back.
The vehicle is now ready to run.
Cleaning up and recycling your motor oil
The task is now complete, but the remaining activity is winding up by cleaning up the place and disposing of the old engine oil. Pour the used engine oil from the oil pan to a used oil container. The old oil filter can be inserted into a plastic bag.
You may take the used oil to a service station for recycling since they accept the used oil and oil filters at no cost. Lastly, throw the old newspapers and the dirty rags in a bin. Remember to record the date that you changed the oil and the odometer readings to know the next oil change.
