The most critical part of the human body is his brain
His brain is the most important component of the human body because it governs our simple daily activities (Garrett, 2015). It is the brain that, by influencing our attitudes, behaviors, and emotions, allows us to understand and react to different experiences. However, by interfering with its communication system and meddling with the way neurons send, receive and interpret information, substance addiction can alter the normal functioning of the brain. I have found that by saturating it with dopamine and substance abusers, most drugs target our brain's reward system, so they appear to repeat the ingestion of these drugs driven by the positive effects they have on them. Having learned the dangers substance abuse can have on our brain, I think that medical practitioners should take charge and mobilize people to abstain from drug abuse. Rehabilitation centers should be accessible for all to help addicts during their recovery session so that they can cope with withdrawal effects. My impressions regarding the brain’s functioning and behavior of addicted people have changed positively. After taking this course, I have learned that both substance abuse and mental disorders are chronic diseases of the brain. Therefore, instead of focusing on the negative effects they have on the individual, I will be more focused on their desire to recover and the positive impact of their recovery.
Social workers’ implications in our field are significant because they provide support to the addicted during their recovery journey (Garrett, 2015). Ideally, social work practitioners have an opportunity to teach drug addicts about addiction and the necessary tools of recovery. Moreover, they are supposed to monitor their clients to ensure that they abstain from substance abuse during the recovery period. After taking this course, working with patients suffering from substance abuse and mental health disorders will be more comfortable because I have a strong understanding of how the brain of an addicted patient works. Moreover, I have a clear insight of how to help patients recover by assisting them to conduct a self-evaluation of their abstinence and ensure that they readily report in case they encounter a relapse.
