Prior to Starting College
I was in a quandary that required me to make a single significant decision that would decide the trajectory of my life. My father was very busy running the family firm, while my mother was in charge of seeking a viable corporation to combine with the family businesses. At times, the processes of the companies were involved, and I used my limited expertise and knowledge to manage certain completed tasks. As predicted by the family tradition, I was to play a crucial role in running some of the companies sooner or later. My boss, as a wealthy man, placed little emphasis on education in comparison to the industry. At one time, he offered me two options that put me in a dilemma.
Choosing Between College and a Senior Managerial Role
I was told to choose between moving on to college or taking a senior managerial role in the family's group of companies. From a business point of view, my father argued that I would perfect my managerial skills after a little training to make me understand the operations of the company. At first, I decided to buy my father's idea of running the companies. After all, we go to college and universities to seek a better life in the future. The good life has to need some money that I was acquiring from the managerial role. I took over the control of the companies, and within a month, everything was running smoothly. However, after three months, I changed my mind and requested my parents to let me attend college first. The request was never accepted warmly by my father, but he later agreed to let me go to college.
Reasons for Changing My Mind
Firstly, I changed my mind because I felt the need to have valid certificates to add to my educational credentials. Secondly, I did my research confirming that even the most successful managers and executive officers possessed formal education. I realized that learning at the college level equipped me with basic leadership and communication skills required by a leader. College was a source of confidence to me considering that I was to put my acquired skills into practice.
Impacts on the Family Business
The decision had several impacts on the family business. I left a leadership gap in the business that was felt by the employees after my departure. Again, things changed in the company with the void of a leader. My father had to convince someone else from the family to take over. As for me, I felt that I let down my family for not taking full control of the family business. I knew that everything would change later after I return on completing my college course. For the few months before replacing a person into my role, the companies lost some amounts of money.
