Final Exams: Survival Guide

posted by Laura Callisen 17 Jul 2015

The end of each semester brings with it final exams, and these are just such a joy! And they come in all shapes and sizes. Some professors like the multiple-choice format, because these exams are automatically graded and recorded by student number – no work to do at all! Other professors decide to give a take-home essay or paper to write, and usually give the assignment a few weeks before the end of the semester so that students can have plenty of time to produce it.

Surviving those Essay and Paper Final Exams – It’s Not Easy

Here are some tips that make up a sort of survival guide for your exam essays and papers.

  1. If you are given an option choose the option about which you know the most. If they are all about equal, then choose the option that you are most interested in.
  2. master essay writing . This is just another for saying you need to start on it as soon as you have identified your topic. There is research to do, and the more you get done early, the less stressed you will be. By now, you know how a research paper is produced, and you cannot scrimp on any of the steps – the final exam grade is a big one!
  3. If your final exam is an essay, do not think that you will not have to muster up research to support your points, because you will. This is a “take-home” final, for heaven’s sake, and because you have the time, the expectations will be high. You can master essay writing for final exams, of course, because you have already mastered it through every essay you have written before this one. Don’t stress – just write the essay using the basic format of introduction, body, and conclusion that you always have. Breathe. Relax. You have “been to this dance before.”

Surviving those Multiple-Choice Question Final Exams

For these, you must study, of course. You will not have enough time to look up every answer, because most likely it will be timed. Here are some tips:

  1. If you don’t know the answer to a question, move on. You can come back later. And the funny thing is this. Often, as you go through the test, the answer to that question will come because there has been some other “trigger” in a question somewhere else.
  2. Go with your first “gut” feeling on an answer. Statistics show that this is usually the right answer.
  3. Eliminate the choices you know are wrong. If you can get the choices narrowed to two, you have a 50-50 shot at getting the right one. And, again, go with your “gut” rather than trying to analyze and agonize over the choices.
  4. Go back and change an answer only if you are absolutely certain that the answer you have is truly incorrect.

Hopefully, you can use this guide to pass exams easily. But here are some other tips:

  1. Don’t listen to people who tell you that you must get a good night’s sleep before a test. You need to take whatever time necessary to review all of the material!
  2. Snack often while you study, and do drink caffeine – it will keep your brain stimulated. Avoid sugar, though. That will give you a quick fix but the crash afterward will be terrible.
