This type of analysis studies the relationship between the artist’s experiences in relation to a person’s gender (p. 184). The last type is psychological analysis, which involves the study of the artist’s state of mind when creating a particular art work (p. 189).

There are several objects and elements used symbolically in the image. The moon on the sky symbolizes night. As the title depicts, the painting is intended to show how life was on a midsummer night in Harlem. The church in the background symbolizes that the people in that area were religious. It is also good to note that the people in the art are black. This symbolizes the black people who were living in Harlem. In addition, the smiles on their faces symbolize a mood of relaxation and joy. It is evidence that these people were quite happy and at peace with one another.
It is also good to notice that there are quite a large number of people in that art. Some are seen on the windows of their houses and some are sitting outside. There are babies and also elderly men and women in the art. This symbolizes community. These people were probably living together with their extended families as a community.
