Architectural Design of the Neoclassic Era
Neoclassicism is a phenomenon that is used to describe the age that brought the enlightenment and era of reason. Through the display of emotion characteristics like that of a pendulum, the arts of neoclassicism revealed the aspect of enlightenment that was unveiled at the end of the age. Harmony, balance, and philosophy were all reflected by the well-known neoclassical architecture. The Ancient Greece vocabulary was used by the Architectural designs to further describe the different part of a building. Columns, Round arches, simple geometric form, and pediments were the terms they made use of. To balance the building, arrangement of the building was done symmetrically. Jefferson's Gravestone is a good example of neoclassical architecture. Just before he died, Jefferson gave vivid instructions about how he wanted his monument to erected. Jefferson provided a sketch and epitaph that was to be included. His ideological plan revealed all the aspects of neoclassical architecture. The sketched shows balance. Once side was the mirror image of the other. The memorial feature circular marble steps. The circular colonnade of Ionic ordered columns with a shallow dome. The design has inspired the building done by modern architecture. This include the Thomas memorial build by Pope that made reference to Roman Panthen and Jefferson’s own design (Veit 116).
Another example neoclassical design is the National Gallery of Art. The building is composed of the west building and East building. The features of the building represent most characteristics of the neoclassical design. The building has a symmetrical shape, triangular pediment, and tall columns. The building is used to store some of the best pieces of art in the world. The building was designed using neoclassical architecture to represent the ancient art of neoclassic. One would say that the building containing the works of art has art itself (Walker 70).
