This research aims to look at Deborah's case study and see how sociological factors have influenced her life. She was forced to make life choices following her family's beliefs because she was born into a middle-class patriarchal family. Her career was slowed by the fact that she married and had children at a young age. She, on the other hand, aspires to pursue her career and education after her divorce. As a result, I will assess her case study from a sociological standpoint. The structural-functionalist sociological viewpoint is the only sociological perspective that can accurately describe Deborah's condition at 37. According to this viewpoint, society's stratification persists due to the need for order. Since social inequality is present in society, in various forms, it becomes inevitable and requisite for a functional society (Bessant & Watts, 2007). Deborah’s parents believe that she needs to play a maternal role instead of seeking professional or scholarly pursuits because that is her supposed job in society.

Her gender and family beliefs have influenced Deborah's life. Her family being patriarchal believes that her place in society is to be supportive of her husband and her children instead of engaging in professional and scholarly pursuits. Further, the fact that she was born a female implies that she had to fit into her family’s ideas on how her life is supposed to turn out.

Social institutions preserve and propagate norms, morals, parts and value systems t observed by members of society (Jang, 2015). In the institution of marriage, most societies around the world anticipate women to put their professional and academic lives on hold so that they can take care of families. Also in the case of a divorce, women more often than not are given custody of the small children, therefore, tying up their time. Australia is still mainly a patriarchal society (Hogg, 2016). As a result, there is increased influence on the roles that Deborah ended up playing, that of a secretary and as a stay at home mother. One negative consequence is long-term unemployment is the deterioration of skills(Wade, 2014). With advancing age coupled with long-term unemployment, Deborah may become less adaptable to the fast changing workplace environment.

I would need information on what skills she acquired during her time at the secretarial college and while working at the local real estate agency to determine their applicability in today’s workplace environment to assist Deborah. I will also obtain information on what she is interested in pursuing regarding career and her going back to school. It is also important for me to determine who will be looking after her kids as she goes about her business.

Based on the information I obtain from Deborah, I will find out the institutions that might be willing to absorb her, and help her work out a work-study program. I will also assist her in finding ways through which she can take care of her children in the course of her studies, be it letting them stay with relatives after school or enrolling them into daycare if they are not of age.

To monitor and review the services provided in this case, I will frequently be assessing Deborah’s performance at work and school, should she enroll. The outcomes will determine the measures I will take after that. Also, it will be important to see how the children are doing both at home and school since Deborah is the primary custodian. The work undertaken should be considered the interests of both the mother and the children.
