Introduction

Approximately one hundred eighty million of America’s populations start their days with either espresso or tea. Apparently, many of the people enjoying their cups accept as true with that the content of what they are consuming would possibly not have an effect on their lives. The truth that it is a tradition to kick start our days with it as section of breakfast makes it addictive and some people cannot go a day except it, and to this, coffee shops like Starbucks owe their profits.

The Presence of Caffeine

Caffeine is a substance located in many plants hence naturally going on though it can be manufactured artificially. It is mainly contained in tea leaves, coffee beans, kola nuts and cacao pods. Apart from the tea and coffee drinks, caffeine is an additive to many foods and drinks bought over the counter. The United States Food and Drug Administration, caffeine is ingested by ninety percent of the world’s population on a daily basis with 80% of the population of America consuming caffeine. Caffeine is said to have 0% nutritional value and its tasteless characteristics make it difficult to know its presence in the food or drinks. It can, however, cause physical side effects and even somebody’s mood as illustrated below (Mayo Clinic 2012).

Effects of Caffeine on Digestion

Hydrochloric Acid production is stimulated by ingesting caffeine into an empty stomach the first thing in the morning. Overproduction of this Acid minimizes it availability when digestion is necessary and due to this, not all of the food is digested when they are egested from the body (Anne Pietrangelo 2016). The overproduction of HCl and caffeine causes irritation of the stomach lining which results to ulcers, IBS, gastritis, and Crohn’s diseases.

Heartburn and Peristalsis

Caffeine relaxes the lower esophageal sphincter leading to an acid influx into the body when the content of the stomach draws back to the esophagus burning with the hydrochloric acid burning its delicate lining causing heartburn problems. Caffeine is a laxative which enhances peristalsis and with the high rate of peristalsis, minimal nutrients get absorbed I the bloodstream affected humans general health.

Effect on Mineral Absorption and Kidney Functionality

Mineral absorption and the functionality of kidney are affected since iron absorption is altered by the presence of the caffeine in the kidney and blood (Anne Pietrangelo 2016). Caffeine has to some extent been considered as cancerous since it is carcinogenic when the coffee beans are roasted under high temperatures with the darker the berries the more carcinogenic it is.

Stress Hormone Release and Its Impact

Caffeine stimulates the release of stress hormones in the human anatomy such as the cortisol, epinephrine, and norephrine which increases the body’s heart rate associated with high blood pressure and tension. Most people consider taking coffee believing that it gives them more energy not knowing that what they consider as energy is the tension created making it difficult for the body to relax.

Effect on Pregnancy

Caffeine has the ability to travel into the placenta through the blood (Jim Dillan 2016). This can result in the increase in the heart rates of the fetus in the womb accompanied by high metabolic rate. Over consumption can lead to slow fetal growth and even miscarriage hence not recommended for the pregnant women.

Conclusion

These are some of the health problems associated with caffeine which most people who are protective of their coffee would not like to hear but to those who mind their health and considers healthy living as a priority, may have a feeling to cut down their coffee level or replace it altogether (Jim Dillan (2016).
