The Last Supper

The Last Supper paintings by Leonardo is among the most outstanding artwork in the world. Leonardo painted this artwork between the 12 months 1494 and 1498 during the Ludovico il Moro`s government. The mural painting depicts the scene in which Jesus Christ used to be having the last dinner with the 12 disciples prior to his arrest (Cremante, Leonardo and Pedretti). Christ actually is sitting in the center of the painting and the disciples are on the sides. During this last supper, Jesus published to his disciples that he was to be betrayed by one of them. Thusly, each and every one of the disciples as depicted in this painting appears in the various motion of both facial and body while reacting to Jesus' revelation.

Features and Color of the Painting

The features and the color of the Last Supper painting were quite detailed and bright before peeling off and this is why currently, the portrait looks deep and blurs (Leonardo, Brambilla, and Marani). Leonardo in this work solved two major problems of instant and perspective. From one perspective, Leonardo captured the reality space of constructing the 2D wall. On the other perspective, he captured the moment which describes the event depicted in the painting. In general, this artwork is the construction in which Christ appears in a triangular shape at the middle as well as his disciples on the two sides. Basically, the apprentices are divided into 4 groups made up of three members. From the right-hand side of Christ, there is Thomas, Big James Philip, Matthew, Thaddeus and Simon and from the left-hand side, there is John, Peter, Judas, Andrew, Little James and Bartholomew. In fact, the painting represents a horizontal work that is balanced and incorporates varieties of emotions.

Motion and Expression of the Figures

The motion and expression of the thirteen figures in this artwork are actually different from one another. Anger, unbelieving, doubting, explaining, discussing are among the expressions which can be seen in this painting, particularly in Judas who was to betray Jesus. In fact, he appears not only extremely terrified but also ready to run away at any minute with the unbelieving expression on his face having heard what Jesus had just said. In contrast to his disciples yet Christ looks quite calm.

Based on the Bible

It is quite apparent that Leonardo created this artwork on the basis of one of the scenarios described in the Bible – Mathew Chapter 26. This is the occasion when Jesus revealed to his disciples that he was aware that one of them would betray him. It is imperative to note that Leonardo successfully depicted this instance by describing the different expressions and motions of each character. Interesting to note is that this painting took Leonardo 7 years to complete it. Additionally, he searched and tracked and even bargained and paid for the models which he deemed could fit in shaping and painting the figure of the 13 characters as described in the Bible. Also of interest is the fact that the images of both Judas and Christ were grounded on the same individual who looked absolutely upright and pure when Leonardo attempted to express Christ's image, yet he become a murderer after 6 years when the artist attempted to solve the final image of Judas in the artwork (Sguaitamatti, Brambilla and Pierce ).

Summary

In summation, the Last Supper artwork by Leonardo is actually a type of artwork that builds on earlier Renaissance traditions of painting in areas like perspective and composition. Yet it is indeed innovative in relation to its study of the psychological states and emotional reactions which are all captured in naturalism that was not known during the Italian painting. The painting captures the 12 persons amid gesticulating, querying and depicting shades of disbelief, anger and horror. The artwork is live, human and contrasts the expansive and serene pose of Christ himself. Although the artwork appears like the straightforward Christian art on the surface, in fact, it is a unique complex work whose psychological complexity, mathematical symbolism, usage of dramatic focus and perspective makes it a real example of the High Renaissance aesthetics.
