Community Intervention vs. Intervention in the Community
Community intervention is described by (McLeroy, Norton, Kegler, Burdine, & Sumaya, 2003) as strategies designed to address a particular health concern in a community. On the other hand, intervention in the community defines the actual implementation of the selected strategies. Such health promotion strategies may be in form of education, vaccination, or clinical checkups.
Advocates of health can address youth violence through community intervention understanding the challenges of the target community. Here, it may be prudent to involve some representatives of the youth and the community for which the intervention program is designed. Through this understanding, the health advocate is better placed to design solutions that offer actual solutions to the community. Additionally, when addressing the problem, the advocate ought to be aware that while the outcomes of community interventions are assessed on a community level, this is an aggregation of individual outcomes and hence create a program that addresses the needs of the population as well as individual members.
Similarly, in the intervention in the community, the advocate ought to involve locals and people in contact with the target youth. It is critical that the implementation of the strategies is supported by people who not only understand but can also connect with the target youth or community. Community-based interventions are heavily reliant on the input of the target population for success. For instance, while addressing the issue of youth violence, using young people as outreach officials is more likely to bear positive outcomes than when other older people or individuals who may not share much with the youthful population.
