Music videos of today's culture are used to call attention to and attract audiences in a variety of ways. The most common method used is feminine nudity, whereby musicians use female bodies to lure audiences, in what is referred to as making videos more sellable, and this paper would use three recent music videos that use those techniques.
Current music videos depict women as erotic vessels that attract males, as seen by Kat Perry's Bon Appetit. The video shows a female body that is usually naked and then speaks of a boy's hunger (Kat Perry). In that regard, women are perceived as vessels that can quench the thirst of men and the video relays different ways by which this is achieved including serving the female body as a meal. The same message is echoed by Jason Derulo and Nicki Minaj’s hit song Swalla, which also portrays the female body as a tool that quenches men’s thirstiness (Green). The music video also utilizes female sexuality to attract viewership, especially the young generation. Shape of You by Ed Sheeran also emphasizes on the same message but with varying degrees. Viewing all the music videos shows some resemblance in terms of female sexuality (Sheeran).
The society has embraced the fact that female sexuality is the main way of being attracted to a video and the artists integrate the messages with the music videos to meet these desires. However, the videos fail to portray the females in the decent form with limited messages focused on the same. They mainly concentrate on arousing the sexual orientation of the viewer, and the examples analyzed evidence the same. As Jhally rightly states, “the videos tell a story about sexuality in our culture and what is considered normal.” In that regard, female sexuality is the prominent mechanism of enticing viewers and making significant sales.
