Drawing the Idea: Hand and Mind
James Wines’ article “Mind and Hand: Drawing the Idea” discusses hand drawing and use of computer systems in architecture. The author supports hand drawing and states that “you are what you draw (Wines, 2011). The author’s primary point of view is that it’s the fluidity of connection between hand and mind that shapes the high-quality of the architect one becomes. According to the author, there is a great connection between what one draws and who they are. Even even though computer applications exist today, hand drawing is nevertheless important, actually integrating computer photographs and hand drawings creates a fluid interface between conceptual development and multimedia. To become precise architects, the author encourages young architects to include drawing for idea development and pleasure. Computers are good, but they cannot replace or even match some of the conceptual and aesthetic qualities. Therefore, it’s important to maintain the connection between the mind and the hand now as it was during the cave artists’ time, and that can only be achieved through hand drawing.
The author’s main point of view is justified since drawing remains the most powerful way to conceptualize and represent architecture. However, most architectural circles have declared the death of drawing by replacing drawing with computers. The author is right in asserting that even though we need computers too, integrating drawing and computer applications works so well. Therefore, to become a great architect, one needs to embrace hand drawing rather than stick to computers which are widely regarded as fashionable. It’s mostly the young architects who are so much into computer use, so it’s advisable to start drawing more for pleasure and idea development if they are to become good architects.
