Section 1: Question 2

For a long time, drugs have always been part of the society, and people especially tend to experiment with them in their teenage years. The reason behind this is that during those years, teenagers try to fit in to secure a place for themselves in the world. A common cause for first-time drug users is conformity, also commonly known as peer pressure. Peer pressure is the way an individual or a group exerts influence on a member or members of a group. This pressure causes a person to alter his or her behavior to conform to what is perceived as the values of a particular group (Santor et al. 165). In many cases, individuals are made to go along with behavior that they inwardly condemn so as to maintain a relationship with peers. Peers are highly valued among teenagers because they provide social support. The fact that peers can offer emotional support and physical assistance to teens makes them more vulnerable to peer pressure.

One of the most important steps towards using teenage conformity to reduce drug use in school is having open dialogues with teenagers. Teenage conformity can be used positively to lead them away from dangers. Students can be encouraged to spend time with popular peers of positive influence which can steer them away from using harmful substances by providing a better sense of belonging. A new place of belonging can increase students’ self-efficacy and enable them to focus on their academic success. The principal can also develop a recovery process that can allow students to share their experiences and offer the social support that they received from their drug-using peers, only this time the support should promote positive behavior.

Section 2: Question 2

Assimilation is the process in which individuals of different racial and ethnic backgrounds interact and fuse into the dominant culture. When people of various ethnic and cultural groups live together, some persons of inferior status become assimilated. If completely absorbed, the society lacks social structures that separate any racial or ethnic concepts. Acculturation which is also known as behavioral assimilation occurs when an individual of an ethnic minority embraces the cultural values and norms of the dominant group (Sam and John 472). Structural assimilation occurs when a person from a minority group is integrated into political, social, cultural and economic circles of the country.

I believe that assimilation represents unity that is crucial for the peaceful survival of a world that has disappearing national boundaries. The world has become globalized, and therefore it is much easier to understand each other if we collaborate and cooperate. This is demonstrated by many global brands that are selling products such as food and clothes in every region of the world. Today, schools in the United States have students from different ethnicities and nationalities. In school, I find it difficult to tell apart those that were born in the country and those who were not. More often than not, they dress similarly, listen to the same music, watch the same movies and speak the same language.

Assimilation can be seen as one of the effective ways of overcoming the challenges resulting from globalization. For example, the increased level of interaction between different cultures can play a significant role in criticizing culture. This can lead to the most favorable outcomes and disregard the least favorable.  However, it should not be forced but allowed to take place naturally.
