Fires in the Mirror - Identity
The scene of identification is the most critical scene. Fires in the Mirror is a play in wars and races, and they are all mutually affected. Diverse communities are in a dilemma of identity and in particular blacks are grappling with their ethnic identity, such as Ntozake Shange (The Desert). They have been left without value to the whites and the Hispanics due to racial prejudice. Though it is difficult, you have to accept yourself. The concept of race and identity in such line gave rise to racism, not the converse. Conflicts are the results of prejudice that are directed along the lines of race, and this is the case of Crown Heights. The only solution to racism is compromises and love of diversity. I identify with this scene and the character because I am also in the path of enlightening people about racial compromise.
Scenes/characters that do not belong to the play
The Scene Hair and the character The Reverend Al Sharpton should not have formed part of the play. Outrightly, they do not add anything to the plot and the intended significant themes in the play. The central themes in the play are conflicts, race, and identity but the discussion in the scene Hair, as well as the monologue of the highlighted character, do not contribute to anyone of them.
Scene/ character reflecting the current American Society
Race and Identity. The American society is still facing challenges of racial prejudice and racial conflicts. Such racial prejudices are fuelling identity dilemma. Cases of a broken judicial system and police brutality and killings along racial lines are still on the rise in the American society. The two scenes express similar scenarios vividly.
Style of Acting
Anna Deavere Smith uses the journalistic style of acting. While acting the play, she acts in the capacity of all the characters and reports that interview results as done in the play. The style is different from all the others in the theatres in various ways but most vividly is the character use and representation. Most of the theatre and TV acting will always involve many characters depending on the number in the book from which the film is adapted. Strangely, Anna decided to represent all the characters.
Intent of the play
The author intended to find in-depth information on the cause of the high tensions that exist between the people of different races. She takes the case of Crown Heights where a recent accident that claimed the life of seven-year-old black boy had triggered racial as well as religious conflicts. She ascertains that the different identities are the prime cause of high tensions amongst the people. The finding is a clear indication that she succeeds in her quest.
