Healthcare Ethics and Communication
Healthcare ethics play a significant role in ensuring that a person makes effective decisions and solves problems appropriately. Having a more in-depth knowledge of the ethical principles including autonomy, beneficence, justice, and non-maleficence will help me in making choices between ethical an unethical behavior. It will be easier to recognize a situation that involves ethical decision making, apply appropriate techniques in analyzing an ethical dilemma and lastly selecting the best possible solution from a list of alternatives (Goethals, Gastmans & Dierckx, 2010). For instance, when justifying a need for the patient to use an out-of-network service will require an application of critical thinking skills to ensure that maximum patient satisfaction is achieved. Thus healthcare ethics assist one in solving the multiple challenges concerning ethical dilemmas without compromise of integrity.
Moral integrity and ethical behavior may go in a similar line, but there is a clear distinction between them. Moral integrity involves quality of being fair and honest and it is a personal choice. It is more internal and cannot be imposed by anyone and thus can be referred to like the sets of principles aiming at guiding an individual's conduct (Wingfield & Badcott, 2007). For example, confidentiality is a prominent ethic in counseling. However, a professional can compromise such a rule to ensure the safety of any party involved in the counseling session. On the other hand, ethical behavior comprises the rules and regulations form with an intention to enable an individual to perform duties and responsibilities by the moral principles. Adherence to an ethical code facilitates efficient functioning in healthcare and medicine field without unnecessary disruptions from diverse parties. For instance, American Counselors Association provides ethical guidelines that counselors should follow to make informed decisions.
Personal and professional etiquette is an essential skill that can foster confidence among co-workers, endear to the patients and impress the superiors. The three critical elements in etiquette that one should employ in the professional life include strong written communication, staying positive an introducing yourself (Goethals, Gastmans et al., 2010). For instance sharing a little about who you are when interacting with patients and colleagues will create a strong foundation from which there are possibilities of building closer and trusted relationships. Additionally, maintaining a professional tone while communicating ideas will portray job seriousness as well as portraying to people that you are an organized person aiming at delivery of quality healthcare. A positive attitude inspires warm feelings together with confidence.
The strengths in communication required in a person’s professional life include the ability to get the actual message across. It implies that one should understand what is to be conveyed and verbally or nonverbally communicate personal ideas and thoughts to another person. Also, use of pleasant voice will portray the person's ability to speak in a fascinating way including volume, tone, and speech of speech (Wingfield & Badcott, 2007). Other strengths include evaluation of possible channels, active listening, avoiding distractions, and encouraging open feedback. The weakness may involve failure to consider needs of all audience, ignorance of the impact of educational level and cultural background on the communication process, underestimating emotional interferences, and misinterpretation.
There are different strategies to employ to stay on-time and on-task in my professional life. Firstly, I will focus on setting achievable and realistic goals to help in staying motivated together with efficient time management. Secondly, I will aim at prioritization of activities to avoid spending time on unnecessary issues and overcommitment on tasks that may not be achieved within a specific time frame. Lastly, proper planning is the strategy that can improve my productivity and performance by focusing my mind on the prioritized tasks.
There are several ways in which an individual can manage the personal, professional goals. They include the creation of open feedback loops, thinking about accomplishments differently, leading the work samples, getting in the conversation by reading industry publications, blogs, and websites and spending time in maintaining the set goals.
