In the wake of the 2000s, the Kenyan population was badly impacted by the outbreak of aids, and there was an upsurge in the number orphans or children who had just a single parent. Children were faced with “physical, emotional and economic risks, a proponent of “hunger, mental illness, school dropout, and exploitation.”(Center for global development).

Reason the cash transfer started in Kenya

The above stated reasons resulted to social, health and economic challenges putting citizens at risk (children mostly), also, foster homes were over crowded leading to the introduction of this program. The living conditions of the orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) exposed them to sexually transmitted diseases including HIV. – and a higher probability of early pregnancies.

The impact of the cash transfer program

The program resulted in a reduction in absolute poverty, with a reduction rate of 36% (Center for Global Development). There was also an improvement in health and food expenditure, improved in diets and sizeable reduction of sexual activities in both boys and girls. The children managed to stay in school and also child labor reduced substantially.

Cost Over Time and Cost Transfer Ratio of the Program

Between 2006 and 2009 (initial phase), the amount of money spent on the program was US$9.96 Million. The cost for the year 2009 to 2016 was more than the forecasted cost of US$126 Million. The program’s cost transfer ration was determined to be 0.34, a value that was compared to the one from an equivalent program done in Mexico.

Implications of such Cash Transfer Program

There was an improvement in the quality of life for the beneficiaries of the program. This was comparable to such programs around the world, and a deduction that the quality of life would be improved if such programs are undertaken in a way that it should be done. A good example is the Latin America case.

Application of Cash Transfers to Other Global Health Issues and its Drawbacks

The case in Kenya (combating the effects of HIV and AIDS) proved that the program could be implemented in any health perspective to improve the lives of individuals and the community at large. An example is in the management of malaria and malnutrition in the Sub-Saharan countries. Drawbacks of the program are an increase in debts as an example in the Kenyan case, and also some families that qualify for the program may be overlooked.
