This paper focuses on the impact of the massive influx of immigrants on major inequalities in human capital, social aspects and accessibility of services. The study is focused on immigrant children and how these children deal with the dynamics that come with their immigrant status (Porte and Rivas 219).

To begin with, the reconstitution and reconciliation of families divided as a result of immigration is a significant effect affecting immigrant children. Separation may result from the parents' economic distress, incarceration, deportation or lack of traditional health. Emotional and behavioral damage can result from separation. Secondly, repeated incidents of discrimination is common among children from immigrant backgrounds. According to Porte and Rivas (230) immigrant youths of color such as mullattoes, blacks and Asians are more likely to encounter racial discrimination as compared to their white counterparts. There are vast psychological effects of discrimination and they include esteem issues, self-identity and stress responses such as post-traumatic stress disorders (Porte and Rivas 228). More so, immigration may impact on their education especially in institutions whereby children experience discrimination from their teachers. Students may develop negative attitude towards school leading to demotivation and consequently lower academic performance. Also, classification of races in the American set up has resulted in plurality of self-designations among immigrant’s children (Porte and Rivas 236).

To remedy this problem, scientists have advanced this topic using two theoretical perspectives namely: culturalist and structuralist theories. The culturalist theory emphasize on assimilation of the immigrant children into the American cultural and linguist mainstream. On the other hand, structuralists propose a new social order whereby the society creates different standards for occupational and educational achievement in order to fully assimilate less-privileged immigrants (Porte and Rivas 224).

Conclusion

The report focuses on the social consequences faced by the child of an immigrant in the American society. Some of the notable consequences can be broadly classified as discrimination, separation from families, psychological effects and impact on their education. Finally, the paper briefly explains some of the solutions put forward by scholars in a bid to eliminate this issue.
