The Movie Miracle is a 2004 docudrama about the American hockey team and their 1980 Winter Olympic Games victory. The events of the game against the Soviet bloc were described as "miracles on ice," leading to the film's title, Miracle (O'Connor, 2004). The ability to do something and see it through is referred to as motivation. In the film Miracle, Herb Brooks, the head coach of the University of Minnesota, is interviewed for the United States National Team's role. In his interview, he outlines his theory and calls for changes in practice plans and tactics to defeat the Soviet team. The film looks at a team that works together to create a rapport and in turn give the country hope of a win in a time when differences among countries was high and the cold war was at its peak(O'Connor,2004).. Herb Brooks had tried out for the National team in the 1960’s and failed to find placement. Years later, we can say he has the motivation in this case an intrinsic one to not only be the head coach for the National team, but to see them succeed. Intrinsic motivation factors are those that an individual does something because it satisfies an individuals need such as fun or challenge. When the team wins they give their country an extrinsic motivation, the act of winning gives the country pride. Extrinsic motivation is acts of an individual or group that is separate from the person doing the act, rather it acts as an encouragement to another party.

The win by the U.S team was both a team and political win. The team had a need to win, because for most of them this was a lifelong dream. Needs are material requirements to achieve a certain thing. Needs are things like food and water (O'Connor,2004). Drive on the other hand is the feeling that comes with need for success. Primary drives are those that determine survival, while secondary drives are learned through personal experiences. Brooks experience with missing out on a chance gives him a secondary drive to see his team succeed and win the Olympic Games. Brooks also encourages his players Rob McClanahan and Jack O’Callahan to put away their rivalries and use that as a drive to working together for the good of the entire team. Due to their need for affiliation Rob and Jack put their differences at bay. Need for affiliation is a situation whereby individuals have a desire to be like these people make great teams as seen in the U.S team of 1980 (O'Connor,2004).

Need for power is seen in Mike when he questions Brooks after their exhibition game in Oslo. The players are distracted by girls and when the coach puts them through vigorous practice, Mike questions Brooks. The distraction of the players is an arousal and as seen performances of any nature are affected when arousal is either too high such as anxiousness or when low such as boredom. Need for achievement is shown in the team when during the games Rob plays despite being in pain and the team becomes inspired by this to work harder on the field. The U.S team is victorious and as such they achieve their dreams and thus fulfil their need to achieve.

The motivation in the 1980 U.S Hockey team was both extrinsic and intrinsic. Players were driven by different things to work hard for the team. The coach, Herb Brooks pushes his team from start to end and makes sure that at all times they remained focused on the goal and when in the final moments of the game he Asks if they believe in miracles, it is evident that they not only were motivated but they believed in themselves in the end. Thus fulfilling one of the many end results of motivation (O'Connor,2004).
