Motivation is categorised into intrinsic motivation and extrinsic motivation. Both motivations help students work towards positive goals. A student who has objectives and goals is possibly to perform well in school due to the cause that he or she can work hard. Therefore, students’ need to be motivated by instructors and guardians as a way of making them perform well at school; for example, teachers have to create motivational strategies and parents should usually advise and appreciate their children performances.

How intrinsic and extrinsic Motivations differ

Intrinsic motivation refers to performing an motion or behavior for the sake of enjoyment. A student gets an intrinsic motivation when he/she excels in a certain subject. Example of intrinsic motivations is when as student works had to perform well on a certain subject to earn rewards or to avoid negative consequences such as repeating the same subject. Extrinsic motivation is a kind of motivation defined by the external factors.  A student may not feel compelled to certain career due to personal interests, but rather the student is motivated by the external factors; for example, a student can be motivated to pursue a career in medicine because his or her family praises the medical industry due to social class or the earning that medical practitioners earn.

Factors that affect Motivation

Lack of students’ motivation is a significant concern because unmotivated students are characterized by distraction, unwillingness, and disorderliness in their education activities (Erica). Lack of sufficient efforts from the teachers impacts negatively to the students’ motivation; for example, if a teacher is not putting reasonable effort to help students, then it is likely that the students cannot perform well due to lack of motivation. Students need the opportunity to discover what they love thus when not given a chance to discover; the students can feel demotivated; for example, a teacher who does not give students chance to express what they love are likely to kill student’s intrinsic and extrinsic motivation.

Strategies that can be used to help Motivate Students in the Classroom

For a teacher to motivate students, he/she need to develop some strategies. Creating a strategic learning environment can aid in motivating students to succeed. Being accessible, being communicative and being challenging are the three strategies that can help in motivating students (Erica). A teacher should create time to meet students at particular times as a strategy to give every student a chance to present individual issues in connection with performances.  Effective communication help in motivating students; for example a teacher should communicate expectations to the students and how the students can achieve such expectations can make students work towards certain standards. Students do not need simple assignments that can make them reluctant. Instead, they need assignments that are just higher than their abilities to make them challenged and eventually work extra hard.

How the Teacher Motivation Affect the Student Motivation

Setting standards to the students can help them work towards certain objectives; for example, if the teacher expects an average of B, then he/she can set rewards to every student that can score B. rewarding students brings competition and motivation in the classroom. A teacher who is accessible give students’ time to present their individual challenges thus it helps in supporting students at their various weakness and ultimately makes them improve (Erica).  Communicating effectively with students on better ways to perform well in class helps in making students well organized as far as their school activities are concerned thus enhance good performance.
