Introduction

Combat scenes provide the finest fun for some viewers. It depends on the background narrative, though. Movies like Full Metal Jacket and Thin Red Line provide immense entertainment because the plot is fictitious even when there are serious violence and likely loss of life. On the other side, Hotel Rwanda is a fiction focused on actual incidents happening in Rwanda. As a result, viewers will still be reminded that the abuse they witness may have happened in true life. The authors and directors of the films preferred distinct stylistic approaches to the creation of the stories in the three films. This paper will focus on the fighting techniques, weapons, and soldiers depicted in the movies and hence establish their similarities and differences.

Hotel Rwanda

To start off, Hotel Rwanda was a movie that was made basing on the events that actually occurred in Rwanda. This is a story about a tribal clash in Rwandan communities; the popular majority and the minority. This clash was characterized by a lot of violence and numerous victims. The result of the clash was genocide and an almost complete annihilation of the minority community named the Tutsi. The movie depicts a clash that was mainly propagated by the members of the community in groups of radical militia hell-bent at eradicating the Tutsi. Most of the militias were not armed with firearms or any kind of military equipment. Instead, the militias were armed with crude weapons such as arrows, machetes, knives, blunt and sharp metallic objects, clubs and every other crude weapon that could maim the targets. The unfortunate community was not ready for the attacks and given that they were the minority, they realistically did not stand a chance. As per the movie the violence spread rapidly as people incited each other into war against one community. As mentioned above the violence was propagated and instigated by locals armed with crude weapons. The militia had leaders who gathered information on the location of the fleeing targets. The main fighting techniques was ambush, these militia would set up blockades on roads and hide in bushes awaiting the fleeing victims. The militias were organized in groups of men armed with crude weapons. The movie makes a feature of one of the Hutu militia leader named Georges Rutaganda. Besides the ambush these militias traversed the places populated with the Tutsi leaving devastation in their wake. Even though they were mostly untrained they were still able to kill or maim over 80% of the Tutsi population. The only people who had more sophisticated weapons were the UN peacekeeping forces led by a Canadian named Colonel Oliver. They did not actively participated in the war but just helped secure some of the survivors (Waldorf 101-125).

Full Metal Jacket

This movie is about a group of Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. They are in a training camp under a Senior Drill Instructor named Sergeant Gunnery Hartman. The Sergeant is hard on the Corps especially one named Leonard Lawrence alias Pyle. There is a lot of friction within the camp as Pyle and his follows struggle to deal with the war and the strict sergeant. Given that it was wartime and that the setting is a military combat zone the fighting was using military style of combat. It is only Pyle who through the pressure goes rogue and kills the Sergeant. The preceding story was then about an attack on the camp. The most featured method of fighting in the movie is military combat. Joker who is one of the main characters acts a protagonist and gives an insight on the experiences of the members of the military during such trying times. As seen in the movie the weapons common were sophisticated according to the standards of the time for example the snipers. At the other hand the common technique were ambush and bombardment. During the Vietnam War both the American and the enemy forces who in this case were the Vietnamese could ambush each other’s camps and incapacitate the particular target. In the movie, the Americans were at the receiving end (Suid 10-14).

The Thin Red Line

This movie has been thought to depict and examine the psychological impacts of combat to the members of the military. The movie is based on a story of a fictionalized Battle of Mount Austen along with the soldiers of C Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, and 25th Infantry Division. Just like the Full Metal Jacket movie, this is a depiction of war tone country. The movie has been acclaimed for the quality of the cinematography and the ear-piercing sound that is used to bring out the distress and turmoil felt by the soldiers. Since most of the exercise in the movie is military based also means that they weapons were military grade and with the common method of ambush to surprise attacks on the Japanese. This can be seen during the attack on Mount Austen and during the reconnaissance mission when five machine guns were used to test the strength of the Japanese banker. The movie brings out immense depiction on the horrors that met the soldiers when they tried to lay siege in on Mount Austen. Compared to the Full Metal Jacket movies, this movie is more violent and action packed as the military personnel encage in various combat mission where they met a lot of resistance (Flanagan 125-140).

Conclusion

These three movies depict a lot of violence. This violence was characterized by varied techniques, equipment, and missions. The difference on mainly the techniques and equipment was brought about by the difference in the people who engaged in the violence and to what cost. The two movies The Thin Red Line and Full Metal Jacket are based on military entities that were in the course of a war. Hotel Rwanda was a difference case because not only were the entities untrained but also that they were not equipped. The difference is also brought about by the difference in time and place. Rwanda was a developing country while the military in the rest of the two movies were from a developed country with way much more resources and military might.
