Reasons for Vegetarianism
Dominion over nature and its inhabitants by human have raised controversial debates especially in consideration of the rights, ethics and moral obligation of the human. The arguments lie on the human obligation to protect natural resources and its inhabitants and their limits in exploiting these inhabitants. In that respect, therefore, this study seeks to discuss the reasons as to why people should stick to vegetarianism.
The raising of animals for food has led to exploitation of animal rights which raised ethical issues. According to the notion of life and being alive, it can be argued that as long as the animal has life, it justifies moral consideration(Thiroux & Krasemann, 2014). In support of this is that people have moral obligation to preserve and protect life. Another notion in support of animal rights is the assertion by Joel Feinberg (1926-2004) which claims that animals like human have interests and therefore they have rights(Thiroux & Krasemann, 2014). Even though animals cannot verbally express some interests such as not to suffer, Joel argues that this constitutes the idea that animals have rights.
Sentientism is another notion that tries to protect animal rights in support of vegetarianism. This notion asserts that there is the existence of soul mind and feeling in animals thereby calling for fair treatment of the animal and protecting their rights(Thiroux & Krasemann, 2014). Like the humans, animals do express a state of consciousness and response to stimuli although on a rudimentary level. Therefore, considering this fact human have moral obligations not to inflict pain and suffering on animals.
Lastly, wholism is another notion that brings the concept of the existence of humans, animals, and plants as the constituents of the natural environment. In that case, therefore, the notion expects the respect and protection of the existence of one another with human being having the moral reasoning on the entire issue(Thiroux & Krasemann, 2014). Considering the environment and states that animals are kept for food they violate the animal rights and therefore making carnivorous an illicit act.
