Rock Music As a Religion
One of the best depiction of the evolution of rock music into being considered as a religion is Dan Graham’s video. In this video, he thoroughly explored the powerful relationship artists such as Ann Lee had with their followers at different points of time. It was evident, from the video that rock music started off by taking some pointers from Bible quotes, chanting and body shaking to rid themselves of evil spirits. At a point, they even used the music to spread gender equality propaganda. But these values began to fade over time as they couldn’t stand the test of time. This made the die-hard fans question the religiousness of the music as a movement. A greater percentage of the video is dedicated to the historical social and sexuality evolution of Americans through the culture of rock music.
My response to the video is that as an international student, it was a bit difficult at first to understand what it was entirely based on. However, one is soon in a position to comprehend the logic behind it as soon as Graham starts to link different religions and famous groups. It is an educational documentary that defines some of the historical cultures of the American people. More so in terms of music because to date, rock, even though it has evolved is an important aspect of the American culture. As such, Rock my Religion easily serves as a stepping stone for those looking to educate themselves on the origins of the music and the kind of impact it hard on different age groups such as teenagers and even women at the time. Dan Graham definitely did a good job in compiling difference emergence in rock for current and future generations to learn from.
