Sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the sudden death of a child without any explanation of the infant in the postmortem. According to Mayo Clinic web page, there are different stages in a child’s development during the first three months. A caregiver should inform medical practitioner about any variation of infant’s development from the standard development process. These include hearing sounds, vision, motor, and communication. SIDS may result from the suffocation of the infant due to excess carbon dioxide when covered by a bed sheet or blanket. Blocked breathing and infections are other causes of SIDS. In addition, abnormalities in part of the brain that control breathing and underdeveloped nervous system that results in abnormal sleep pattern are potential causes of SIDS (Guttmacher 6). Other risk factors are sharing a bed with infants or placing infants on a couch.
Caregivers should let the babies rest on their backs when sleeping to reduce the possibility of death due to SIDS. The infant should have its own bed that in an adult’s room. Moreover, crib bumpers are dangerous to the infant when the infant is sleeping. Mirrors and mobiles are useful in an infant’s initial development since they help in face identification. Couches and sofas are risky to an infant’s development (Jack 72-75).
Finally, toys are useful in forming a grip. The textile in the baby’s crib should be soft and tight, but not spongy. In conclusion, parents and caregivers can reduce incidences of SIDs through education of parents and caregivers hence enhance the proper care of toddle.
