The rate of type two diabetes has been rising across the globe with predictions that it could reach 642 million by the year 2040, typically representing one in every ten adults. In addition to the implemented EHR, a new digitized technology to enhance self-management needs to be implemented. The digitized system will be in the form of a mobile applications. The mobile system (mHealth) is the most appropriate in this situation (Shruti Muralidharan, 2017). The mHealth system can be used by both insulin users and individuals who are at risk of getting the ailment. Unlike the EHR which keeps patients’ records and shares the information across hospitals, this technology will provide patients and other individuals with information regarding primary, secondary, as well as tertiary methods of preventing diabetes as well as treatment available. The core purpose is to enlighten people into making appropriate lifestyle and behavioural decisions (Karingula, 2016). The system is mainly through SMS, Tweets, as well as medication reminders. Its target group will be both diabetes patients and the general public.
Considerations for the technology
Ø Location: the technology can be integrated with the EHR system
Ø Cost: the startup and operation costs are considerably low. For example, SMS and mobile applications are easy to obtain. However, diabetes phones are not cost-effective
Ø Regulations: the technology poses significant threats to privacy and confidentiality that are fundamental regulations within the health care system
Advantages
The m-Health application will reduce the burden of individuals coming to the facility to check their condition. The mobile system or applications can be used to check someone’s health status (Shruti Muralidharan, 2017). Furthermore, for the diabetic patients, they can accurately determine when to administer insulin. The application will also promote self-management among individuals. Moreover, it will help health enthusiasts into making lifestyle choices which will assist them in prevention of Type 2 Diabetes. Generally, the Mobile-Health application will lead to an improvement of patient care as well as individual diabetes prevention (Viral N. Shah, 2015).
Disadvantages
The only disadvantage of the m-Health applications is that some individuals and patients who have not embraced technology might find it hard to operate this platform.
