The Lion Panel painting from the Chauvet Cave
A Chauvet is a prehistoric cave with painting filled with information from the footprints of animals and human beings in Ardèche department of southern France. This cave is one of the oldest prehistoric paintings in the world. It was discovered in 1994 by three speleologists during a survey of a cave nearby (Pettitt and Paul 547). Discovering this artwork was significant because the content of the images and the techniques used was highly surprising due to the fact that the animals represented in the paintings were very unusual.
The animals represented in stone art were usually animals that the humans hunted for food. However, in the chauvet, the wild animals that were not killed for food were usually the most sophisticated ones in the drawings. Besides, Chauvet also contains numerous dynamic
and powerful compositions that had multiple images that underwent skillful execution as well as arranged to fit the contours of the cave chambers showing the expertise of artists.
Besides, the purpose/significant of the Lion Panel from the Chauvet cave was based on a popular theory centered on the subject matter of the paintings as well as the fact that it was not used as a place of regular habitation and as such, it functioned as a Centre of rituals or magical ceremony. The primitive beings or deities worshipped their spirits in the caves, and as such, the images were intended to characterize the concepts of the spirits (Quiles et al. 4672).
The existence of Chauvet Cave showed a relationship between human and art since the cave was extraordinarily big and was occupied by the prehistoric human during two different periods, the Aurignacian and the Gravettian. The interactions of humans and the cave's primary residents showed the manner in which people used Chauvet Cave.The existence of the paintings also show a type of collaboration between humans and artists.
