The Role of Respiratory Therapists in Ethics Committees
Ethical decisions and actions should reflect the values of staff and the institution. In health care facilities, the multi-disciplinary approach may is favored in coming up with an ethics committee. The committee may include specialists from various fields like a critical nurse, physician, physiotherapists among others. This paper outlines some of the roles that may be performed by respiratory therapists.
They offer respiratory therapy measures to the committee and to which help in providing treatment and diagnosis of respiratory related problems as determined by independent functions, standing physician orders, and policies and procedures. They may also help with the facilitation, implementation and modification of patient and family education/teaching based on the requirements of the patient with regards to respiratory diseases, inadequacies, failures or other related problems (Respiratory Care, 2017).
Additionally, they act as the resource for other members of the committee team with regards to modern respiratory care standards to enable safe and competent practice. Similarly, they also act as a resource to health care committee members, customers and their rest of families in the realm of pulmonary disease and treatment (Respiratory Care, 2017). They, therefore, promote continuing education within the department that they represent in the committee.
Respiratory therapists in bedside ethics consultation teams also help with the administrative duties and functions of the respiratory therapy unit that they represent in the team to ensure proper functioning of the committee. Quality is a critical aspect of health care and as part of their roles, they monitor the quality control and functioning of the respiratory equipment and make sure that they are working as per the acceptable standards (Respiratory Care, 2017).
Apart from the critical role that the respiratory therapists perform in health care facilities, they play an important part in the multi-disciplinary bedside ethics consultation teams. Without having a respiratory therapist in the teams, the critical aspects that are concerned with respiratory therapy are likely to be left out.
