Have you ever wondered what the world would be like in ten or twenty years given how quickly technology is developing? The Amazon Echo in brief
Before we get to the process of setting up Amazon’s Echo and learn how to use it, let us first know what this device is. Well, Echo is a next-gen smart speaker that allows you to listen to music and radio, set alarms, play audio books, order pizza and retrieve other real-time information from the Internet. Echo is powered by a voice-controlled, artificially intelligent personal assistant, Alexa. Echo has seven microphones with wide-field voice recognition that allows you to make commands even when it is playing music. This attribute is very useful, especially when using Echo while it is in another room. The device also has multi-directional audio playback that fills a space with 360º immersive sound (Amazon.com par. 1).
The Process of Using Amazon Echo
First, you have to purchase the device from Amazon’s online store, Amazon.com. Echo costs $179.99 and is shipped for free. Once you receive the device, the real process begins. In the beginning, you start by downloading the Alexa app if it is not installed on your smartphone. Due to its technical requirements, the app is supported by smartphones and tablets with either; Fire OS 3.0 and above, Android 4.4 and above and iOS 8.0 and above (Amazon.com par. 2). The app can be obtained from Apple’s and Amazon’s App Store and Google’s Play Store. After downloading the app, you will have to create an Amazon account which is quite easy, bearing in mind Alexa takes you through all the steps.
With Alexa configured and ready to go, it is time to start Echo. Connect the power adapter provided into Echo and then plug it into a power outlet. Note that a light ring on Echo will light blue, then orange. Having turned orange, Echo will greet you. Remember, Echo can only work when it is connected to the internet. Therefore, it is prudent to connect it to a Wi-Fi network. Echo can be connected to a Wi-Fi network using Alexa, the app you had initially installed. Echo only runs on networks that use the 802.11a / b / g / n standard and not peer-to-peer networks (Amazon.com par. 3). If the device fails to connect to a Wi-Fi network, unplug it from the power outlet and redo this step.
After successfully connecting it to a Wi-Fi network, you can now start talking to Alexa. Echo is constantly listening for the wake word which is Alexa. Ifi t hears the word, it will respond by asking what you want it to do. From there, you can ask it to order pizza from Domino’s, book a ride with Uber, listen to music on iTunes, Spotify and Pandora, and control your lights and thermostats. Amazon is working to bring onboard more third-party applications and services that will enable you to do more without lifting a finger.
In conclusion, we can assert that the future has a lot in store for us. Devices such as Echo will continue to revolutionize our daily lives and make them simpler, but we will have to wait and see how this pans out.
