Generations of the Past

Generations provide a specific picture of the types of behaviors that were common in that period, and projections are made for the acts that could be carried out at a later date. According to William Faulkner's account, the elderly in the group were honored for their efforts and the role they played in society. It is evident in the attendance at the funeral of the old lady (Emily Grierson). Emily was sent off with much respect and love from the world, regardless of gender, age, or sex. The older generation also had a sense of decoration in the areas that they lived, leaving the environment with an imagination of the type of person that lived in that house. Similarly, the people from the old generation wished to live alone and spend majority of their time reflecting on what they feel offers a reflection of their lives. In the story, the old lady lived alone with minimal visits from family creating an aspect of worry "how did she make it living in such a big squarish frame house".

Respect for Rules and Charity Work

In the story, it is noticed that the people of the older generation often respected the rules that were being drafted by the township leaders. An incident of going against the rule would then lead to punishments which are a subject that they often disliked. For example, Faulkner (3) states that Alive and Miss Emily respected the order that no Negro woman was to appear on the streets with no apron on their body. Additionally, the lady in question loved getting involved in charity work, giving the young generation an opportunity to attain their goals in life.

The New Generation

On the contrary, the majority of the activities done in the previous years are hardly applied by the current society. Not all laws are fully respected by the public as people have different preferences on how they wish to live and make their operations in society. It then viewed as the new generation having a new idea on how to live and work in society. However, some restrictions that are provided by the leaders in the current generation may be deemed as racial. For example, the law that prohibited "Negro" women from walking without an apron is discriminatory leaving a given class of people with limited freedom of expression. The application of such laws in the current era will lead to the filing of a lawsuit to demonstrate an aspect of equity.

The Backbone and Spirit of the Town

According to the story, the new generation is considered as the backbone and spirit of the town. The theme then illustrates the nature of publics that are produced with time. This class of people is deemed to be patient and will always wait for an appropriate moment to call for their rights than pushing the leaders to give an immediate change in the laws. A quick change will then affect the way of life as the board is likely to offer the wrong information to the public.

Conclusion

Conclusively, the story demonstrates the ways of life that were being experienced in the old time and the expected means of living in the current era. Miss Emily shows the ways that people have to respect the law and later make the required changes. Therefore, the old generation is viewed as a patient group in seeking change as compared to the new generation that focuses on modernity in ways of life.
