Implicit Bias
Implicit bias refers to the insolences, which have an effect on our ability to understand issues and selections apparently. They involve taking in involuntary objective and subjective assessments. The implicit associations that exist in the subconscious section of the body make us bring out feelings about what we sense about people based on tribe race, gender and appearance. The feelings and attitudes that we have do not come up in a single day. They develop slowly over the course of a lifetime probably from when we are very young. The geographic vicinity where we live could mildew our feelings towards such certain problems.
They are subconscious stereotypes that give us expectations towards certain things. Apparently, everybody has implicit bias behaviors, which make us judge people by use of generalizations, which may not be all true all the time such as even a teacher who is nice and respectable,could be biased at some point towards a student (Cheryl, and Patton, 98).
Gilliam was very eager to know the reaction of the teachers about some videos he gave them to watch. Each video contained one black boy and girl and a white boy and girl taking part in bad behavior. From the reactions Gilliam got from the teachers, most of the people who were expelled were black kids. Lesser white kids were expelled from the schools (Turner n.p).
According to research, the number of black kids expelled from schools is four times the number of the white kids. The reason for this is, people spend more time focusing on the black kids and the way they behave, and forget to follow up with the white kids because there is an implicit bias that the black kids will do the wrong thing (Turner n.p).
Finally, Gilliam did a Yale study, which had two parts. Also, the results of the study were, black teachers looked out for bad behaviors from the white kids and regarded the blacks to be of a higher standard while the white teachers looked out for bad behaviors from the black kids and regarded the fellow whites to have a higher standard as compared to the blacks.
Conclusions
The reactions are purely biased. Gilliamstated that biases are natural and this explains why there are higher suspension rates for the blacks as compared to the whites.
